Locally known as Dolay Goemba, Dolung Goemba is known for Dolay Mi Raksha dance. It’s popular mainly because of its ter-baab (treasure mask) crafted out of a lump of precious wood called ‘bau’ by Khenchen Soenam Yoezer. Khenchen was the 2nd Je Khenpo of Bhutan (1672 – 1689). It is said that some 360 years ago, the locals in those days had been hearing an ox bellowing every night in the midst of jungle nearby, and when searched for, they finally discovered a ‘bau’ instead of an ox. On offering the ‘bau’ to Khenchen, the Lam crafted a mask out of it and coincidentally shaped up into an Ox face. Dolay mi Raksha is performed every year during Wangdue Tsechhu and the same dance was said to have tamed the powerful Tsho-mem (mermaid) of Wangdue Tsangchhu that obstructed the construction of Wangdue bridge then. In the picture below, you will see me with the three Champoes who had and have been performing the Raksha dance in some order of lineage.
